Gay Bars 101: What You Should Comprehend Before Going to a Gay Bar

So, there you are:

  • It’s a Friday night.
  • The weather is warm.
  • You’ve finished a prolonged work week.

Just a few rapid things to get through this week — including (but not limited to) a Neapolitan street party, a cemita festival, two very different suburban expansions, the loss of a legend in the Italian Market, and the give back of Tavern on Camac. Tavern on Camac Returns With a Brand-New Kitchen (and Chef)

For the past year, Tavern on Camac has been undergoing some serious renovations — by which I express, essentially, a complete restore of the kitchen from the floor up. Every surface, every piece of equipment, every fitting, all the gear — all of that is recent. They doubled their cooler space (which is a huge thing — inquire your chef friends) and reoriente

Late in 1987, Al Thomas was looking for a location for a modern gay bar. He saw an ad that D.K.'s Bar, a lesbian block, was for sale, and decided it might be a good location for gay bar- perhaps womxn loving womxn, perhaps gay.

Meanwhile, the location was in the area fast becoming the central concentration of LGBT bars in the city. (These are documented in the "Milwaukee Bars Region 2" page.) All of these other LGBT bars in the area during this time meant there would always be new, younger people discovering his modern bar as it was that close to other bars.

On December 5, 1987, Dotie held a farewell party for customers and staff of D.K.'s Tavern. On the very next night, the bar re-opened, and new owner Alan Thomas (formerly a resident of Kenosha who had bought the business and moved up to Milwaukee) declared it was "still a women's bar" and would retain the matching staff and name. But within a few months business had shown that a change was needed; Al renamed the business The Triangle in June 1988 and reopened as a gay bar. (IS SO 4-20)
