Dating apps offer safety counsel amidst LGBT+ crackdown in Egypt

Two popular dating apps have launched initiatives to keep their Egyptian users safe after the recent arrests of gay and bisexual men by authorities in Cairo.

Grindr and Hornet have issued in-app guard warnings, urging users to take certain precautions before meeting up with someone they’ve met online.

Amnesty International reports that at least 57 men have been detained for ‘habitual debauchery’ and ‘promoting sexual deviance’ in the weeks monitoring a concert held by Lebanese band, Mashrou’ Leila where footage of a group people waving rainbow flags went viral.

There are reports that authorities possess been using apps such as Grindr to footpath down members of the LGBT+ community.

Jack Harrison-Quintana, a director at Grindr told Reuters that the warnings would remind people to take extra care while using dating apps.

“It will make people take more precautions ... we understand that the police are under pressure to arrest people and they are going about doing that through all the avenues that they have,” Harrison-Quintana

A Gay Date Through the Streets of Cairo

Reblogged with permission by the Breakaway Backpacker, Jaime Davila

The door-opened lights went on in the dorm as if it was not 2am. I woke up pissed, but was freezing chilly and needed to pee. I realized it was the hostel worker exhibiting people the dorm. I handled my business, and then went up to him and asked him for an extra blanket. I thought, “hmmm he is cute”. We gave each other a look, but wasn’t sure if it was the “oh hey I am gay too look” or the “oh hey we accidentally caught each other looking at each other look”. He asked me to trail him to the closet. He made small talk… “Where are you from?” “What’s your name?” I didn’t reflect anything of it, and then in the closet for a split second we looked at each other and I swear he was going to reach out and kiss me. Me on the other hand thought “OMG I WANT TO JUMP HIS BONES”, but thought to myself “Jaime you are half asleep and just got here in Egypt don’t get insane calm the f*** down”. So I got my blanket and went support to sleep.

I got up in the morning to relax my free breakfast; he was still around and I swear we were looking at each other like “hey lets f***”, but ugh I

Fear and paranoia grip Egypt’s LGBT community: ‘I crave to be forgotten’

— -- When the crackdown began, LGBT people across Egypt began dropping off internet dating apps, stopped meeting friends and charted their escape.

As police in the conservative, Muslim country rounded up dozens of people over the past two months, intensifying their persecution of the country’s LGBT citizens, a wave of paranoia and fear swept over the community. In interviews with ABC News, half a dozen LGBT people in Egypt described feeling trapped and terrified that they, too, could terminate up imprisoned and tortured by the security services.

For one 32-year-old man from Cairo, taking refuge in the desert seemed safest.

The man, who teaches fresh adults about gender studies, identifies as pansexual, where one does not like one specific gender or orientation over another. He moved to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and started volunteering at a guest home. Like others interviewed by ABC News, he requested anonymity, worried he could be detained for speaking out.

“I want to be forgotten for a bit,” he told ABC News. “That’s exactly how I feel right now.”

He said his boyfriend attended a Sept. 22 Cairo concert
