It's been an ~interesting~ journey for lgbtq+ people in the movie and television industry. Once upon a time, queer and lesbian actors, specifically, had to stay in the closet, and there were next-to-no male lover parts on screen.
The idea that openly gay actors can play het characters is a relatively new phenomenon. Previously, out gay actors could only really work when roles for them a) existed, and b) weren't being given to heterosexual actors.
Now it seems much more acceptable for an openly lgbtq+ actor play a straight character. In fact, here are 18 times an actor has played a straight ethics on screen, despite being openly same-sex attracted or queer in real life...

Some well-known people (men and women) whom I think are in the closet. This list has homosexual & lesbian closet actors & actresses in Hollywood.
The list IS IN a particular ORDER - from most speculated & obvious to just fairly. View out for the celebrities in the top 10 - I guarantee that one or two of them are out within ten years or so.
NOTE: This list is not made to badmouth or disparage these people. I'm in no way poking amusing or anything. This is just a speculation list. So please take it lightly. :)

These days, it's common for celebrities to publicly come out as gay in the media, but that wasn't always the case. Several famous gay celebrities remained in the closet throughout their entire lives.
Who is the most famous same-sex attracted celebrity who never came out of the closet? Cary Grant tops this list. Though he was married five times to five different women, many people believed that Cary Grant was actually male lover. He lived with performer Randolph Scott on and off for over a decade and he was also rumored to include hired male prostitutes.
Despite his flamboyant stage presence, Liberace never officially came out as gay. He even went so far as to sue a publication for libel when they printed that he was gay. Liberace's friend, Betty White, has stated that the musician was, in fact, homosexual. Other secretly closeted movie stars comprise Rock Hudson, Anthony Perkins, and Robert Reed.

For many, June represents the month of pride; a time to celebrate, coach and communicate all that is queer, gay and fabulous. Although today creature gay isn’t much of a deal, back in the 50’s it was a dangerous label to have. Throughout history, thousands have lost their lives because they were labeled as ‘gay’ or ‘queer’ and many lived out their true sexual preferences in secrecy. As it’s almost the end of Pride month, I wanted to have a stare at some celebrities from the golden age of Hollywood who were homosexual, or at least thats what the rumours said. It’s difficult to realize if all these celebrities, and of course many more, were truly lgbtq+, but I wanted to share a few stories just so see how far we’ve come. Cheerful pride everyone.

Let's state the obvious: Being a gay celebrity during the days of Antique Hollywood was no stride in the park. Behind Tinseltown's glitzy facade loomed the specter of Hollywood's "sexual gestapo," a phrase coined by Matt Tyrnauer, director of the documentary Scotty and the Classified History of Hollywood (via NPR). "It was very difficult," he said, "for people to contain authentic lives." And Tyrnauer should know: His clip profiled L.A. personality Scotty Bowers, who reportedly acted as a "confidante, confidant, and pimp for Hollywood's closeted movie stars."
The threat of exposure was authentic and ever-present for these entertainers. Per Tyrnauer, studio contracts contained so-called "moral clauses" that could instantly vaporize a lucrative career. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department's vice squad were all too willing to bust celebrities, often working in cahoots with the press in their quest to hobble reputations.
