Pride 2021: Ireland's Lgbtq+ Artists Offer Advice To Rising LGBTQ Talent
An undeniably connected creative collective, the Irish queer tune scene is brimming with talent. In honour of Pride weekend, Hot Compress asked some of the nation's brightest LGBTQ stars to offer words of advice to rising stars - whether they're penning future hits alone in their bedrooms or already hitting big stages. Despite the industry's heteronormativity (a global issue within the music business), Ireland's musicians truly know how to light up the room.

"To rising LGBTQ artists, I would say you are so much more than your queerness and that your sexuality does not define your talent. At the same time, always stay true to yourself because there’s someone out there like you, that will be inspired by you living freely."
"It can be harder to undergo like your voice will be heard in an industry where you’re the odd one out sometimes. People can be so homophobic, which is scary - but in my opinion it’s even worse for gay men and I hate that. But then again I’m a black woman and it’s not exactly the norm for a black gal to be out, confident and queer. Some people still have this weird stigma again

28: Laura Jane Grace (1980-)
Born in Fort Benning, Georgia, Laura Jane Grace had a tumultuous time growing up (significant events include dropping out of school and being arrested for challenging a police officer over a petty crime), before finding inspiration in the music of legendary British anarcho-punk band Crass. By her mid-teens, the seeds had been sewn: she was punk through and through, and she formed her control band, Against Me!, in 1997, living with the team on the fringes of society until their critically acclaimed debut album, Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose, was released in 2002. Grace had been making allusions to being transgender through her music as early as 2005, and came out in 2012, with full support from friends, family and the band. One of the most pioneering LGBTQ+ musicians of her generation, she continues to make music today, and remains politically active, having notably hosted the 2019 Heavy Music Awards in Kentish Town, London, and endorsing the music help Nordoff Robbins.
