Mama Shelter’s Lisbon outpost is as loud, pleasurable and fancy-free as the city itself

I arrived at Mama Shelter from the beach – sand in my shoes, covered in daystar lotion, hair stringy with seawater – and found myself sharing the elevate with an impeccably dressed group ascending to the rooftop for sundowners. Not that anyone gave a damn, because anything goes here, the only Portuguese outpost of Mama Shelter’s brand of playful boutique hotels strung across the continent. 

It’s as cheeky as its sister venues (sex toys for sale in the lobby, superhero masks on the lampshades, a pretty extensive adult film menu on the telly), but with petite Portuguese flourishes to remind you where you are – the forest verdant tile-clad exterior, a Remodelado tram mural in the elevate, ocean-wave carpets in the bedrooms, marine-themed decor in the restaurant and locally-made arts and crafts dotted all over the place.

Opened in 2008, the imaginative Mama Shelter in Paris was conceived by the Trigano family, which also co-founded Club Med, and the French urban philosopher Cyril Aouizerate. And it was designed by the ubiquitous Philippe Starck (the team is pictured below).

Mama Shelter Paris swiftly mopped up awards and plaudits from the likes of Condé Nast Traveller, Wallpaper, Vogue, Les Inrockuptibles, and other eagle-eyed observers of the fashion scene.

Thanks to its roaring success, the Mama Shelter crew has been busily expanding the brand, with new branches in Istanbul, Lyon, Bordeaux and Los Angeles. Now Marseille has its very own Mama Shelter too.

The project cost 20 million €uros, raised from intimate investors using the tax-efficient buy-to-let business model already popular in Britain and North America. At the launch Serge Trigano told us it aims to attract a clientele of 50% business travellers and 50% tourists.

Let’s face it. Everyone loves a little stay-cation once in a while. Last week, I had the opportunity to linger at Mama Shelter’s logo new London location. Situated just a short step from trendy Shoreditch, Mama Shelter is known for its homely setting and edgy designs. If you’re a 90s kid fond me, you’ll be in for a treat. The hotel boasts with petty throwback items scattered all over the place. Assess Street Fighter, Looney Tunes and X-Men, just to name a few! *oh emmm geee*

When I arrived at Mama Shelter London, I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere. It was definitely my kind of place to not only stay over for the night but also hang with friends in the back garden or grab dinner at the restaurant. *new hangout alert* But let’s chat about drinks and sustenance a little bit later.

The thing I like about Mama Shelter London the most is the proof that their rooms initiate at a whopping £99! *wowsers* With nearby hotels offering less for more money, you’re definitely getting yourself
