Who invented gay pop

In a move that shocked both the business community and the queer community, JoJo Siwa has been unanimously appointed the CEO of gay pop. Granted, the board appears to include only Siwa herself, but maybe that’s just because Elton John is busy writing musicals. In an interview with TMZ, Siwa answered for the backlash she elicited last week by calling herself the “inventor” of gay pop. Siwa established that she did not invent gay pop. “Madonna, Lady Gaga, fucking Michael Jackson, there’s so many people who have made gay pop,” she conceded. In fact, the meek singer said she’s not even the “president” of gay pop. She’s in more of a managerial role. “I do wanna be a piece of making it bigger than it already is. I wanna bring more attention to it,” Siwa says in the interview. “I might be like the CEO, or the CMO.” In her position as gay pop CEO, we hope that Siwa will appoint Chappell Roan as secretary of transportation, as she already has ideas about how to leave (hot).

During an interview on SiriusXM’s Hits 1 Miami With Mack & Jen, Siwa clarified the comments she made in a viral video interview with Billboard, saying she simply wants to see more queer art get recognized. “So, here’s the thing — ‘gay pop’ is a thing that people have done, but it is not an official genre of music,” she explained. “It is a style, but it is how there’s rap, there’s rock, there’s R&B, there’s pop — if you look on the iTunes charts … this should be a literal genre of music.”
The former Dance Moms star continued, saying that she doesn’t perceive the current categorizations for LGBTQ+ artists are sufficient. “There’s so many same-sex attracted pop artists … but I think that those gay pop art
No, JoJo Siwa Did Not Invent Gay Pop
Jojo Siwa, the former Nickelodeon celestial body and honorary fifth member of the band Smooch, landed herself in steamy water in April after saying she “wanted to start a new genre … called ‘gay pop’ ” during promotions for her unused single, “Karma.”
Many people online subsequently pointed out that the 21-year-old Siwa in no way, shape or form created gay pop, as it’s existed for a long time. Siwa later walked back her remark, but the initial proclamation marked an attempt from a shining new mainstream creator, who has been a brand for much of her young life, to drive a new brand idea to stakeholders. This one butted up against the actual world that the genre is actually well-trodden and storied, complete with an ancestrally rich community. Gay pop — and gay dance and club culture overall — arguably traces itself back to the illustrious drag balls of the Harlem Renaissance, flits through the postwar era to the Cold War and Lavender Scare, stemming from Ma Rainey, Little Richard, Sylvester, Erasure, the Pet Shop Boys and so many more. In the underground scenes I frequent, our queercore ancestors include Great Boys, Pansy Division,
