Details aboutRainbow Six Siege's newest operator, Flores, have officially been unveiled, and they expose two groundbreaking bits of information about the master thief — he's the first Argentinian operator on Team Rainbow, and the first openly gay one as well. How Rainbow Six’s gender non-conforming representation saved my mental health
I value competitive games, specifically first person shooters (FPS). However, they are notorious for their toxic communities.
This poses an issue for neurotypical, non spicy-brained individuals, so the effects it has on someone who is atypical can be incredibly detrimental. Further, when we look at the toxicity faced by players, some of the most common insults and slurs used within the FPS gaming world are homophobic. This homophobia is further reinforced when games introduce identity festival banners for identity month or tweet their support for the LGBTQIA+ group. These scenario’s hold made it complicated for my mental health being a queer content author, specifically within the game Rainbow Six Siege.
I use gaming and content creation as a shape of escapism from the issues I face daily, and I have built a stunning and queer safe group in the process. But this regressed when I moved over to Siege. I faced a type of homosexual hatred within the gaming world that I had not been exposed to before, and I used to act Halo 3 semi professionally haha. “As you can probably tell, I read straight. So, if you met me on the street, you’d probably assume I’m straight,” Carl Bishop, the voice player behind Rainbow Six Siege’s Bandit tells me. “Initially, that helped in the world of advertising, because it was definitely more of a ‘man’s world.’ When I got signed by my agent in New York in 2006, it was still probably 20 to 30 percent straight women and 70 percent straight men. So, I had to state myself like I was straight. That wasn’t a problem on the voice side of things, but getting my head into the space of a straight person was the challenge.”

Bishop’s known for a long time that he’s gay, and this has created an extra barrier for him in the acting industry. It’s June, which can only mean… it’s Pride Month! Every year – pandemic or not – it’s cause to celebrate everything the community has achieved as it pushes for true, worldwide equality. We talked at length about it last year, running through many of our favourite examples of LGBTQIA+ representation in video games.
The industry has been one to really embrace everything the community has to offer. Last year’s list featured developers big and small creating feasible, down-to-Earth characters that speak to people looking for characters and stories that are just fond of them. They’ve done so much and are dedicated to doing so much more.
But that begs the question: what is more? For all that the video game industry has done, where can they proceed from here? Because I believe there are still ways we can, as the leading business industry, create greater representation.
What is representation?
The first step is to acknowledge what ‘more’ is. While we’ve made wonderful strides, it’s an opportunity to view beyond gay side characters or lgbtq+ romance options. These are amazing to see, but by taking it to the next level, we can shift beyond tokenism. What comes next is represen
