The Gayness of Batman: A Brief History

"Gayness is built into Batman. ... Batman is very, very gay. There's just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he's intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay."

As we reported last week, this was the claim made by Batman, Incorporated author Grant Morrison in an interview with Playboy where he offers his insights into the psychology of superheroes. In Morrison's view, Batman's attachment to Alfred and Robin and his alleged detachment from the women in "fetish clothes" who "jump around rooftops to acquire to him" is symptomatic of his conceptual gayness. That's a very selective framing, but as Morrison told the LA Times in 2010, "Batman can take anything. You can do comedy Batman, you can do gay Batman."

That's not true, of course. You can do comedy Batman, and you can do The Midnighter (Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch's openly gay Batman analogue), but DC Comics is unlikely to allow any journalist to make Batman gay, even in an Elseworlds or alternate-universe story. As Morrison himself says, Batman is intended to be het

The Authority Will Introduce Queer Versions of Batman and Superman

Several unexpected faces are showing up in the first part of James Gunn's DC Universe show revamp, including characters once published by another organization. The Authority will main attraction more hard-edged characters who were once part of Jim Lee's WildStorm Space. Perhaps the most well-known members of this team are very similar to Superman and Batman, though the differences between them are quite stark.

Apollo and Midnighter were the requisite Superman and Batman counterparts in WildStorm, but the duo was far more than just allies. Some of the first openly gay characters in comics, their dynamic will likely be a huge paradigm shift in the DCU movies. It will also exist as a very much inverted version of a controversial DC clip from the Snyderverse, showcasing just how different the "World's Finest Couple" is from their influences.

Batman finally met his parallel universe variant who’s married to Superman

After nearly 10 years of existing in the similar continuity, Batman and Superman have finally spent some canonical time in the same room as Midnighter and Apollo, thanks to Operation Comics scribe Phillip Kennedy Johnson.

Johnson has been prepping all year for the Man of Steel to take a strike team of powerful but depressed profile superheroes to the planet Warworld, in order to rescue a private group of Kryptonians who survived the planet’s destruction. This week’s Batman/Superman Rule Special picks up where Grant Morrison and Mikel Janín left off in Superman & the Authority, with a special Batman-themed side quest for Superman’s team of misfits.

Apollo and Midnighter were originally Image Comics characters who, though their origins differed significantly, were obviously, flagrantly, reflections of Batman and Superman. And they were in love.

Without context, it’s a titter-worthy amusement. But within the comics in which they appeared — and they were not one-offs! — Apollo and Midnighter were not a “breaking up and getting advocate together” sort of soap opera partnership, but a “If anyone messes with my h

The Advocate is not claiming that Superman is gay. It's making a larger point -- that like many gays and lesbians, Superman has a secret life. In the closet or smartphone booth, as the case may be, Superman has another identity that he doesn't share with anyone.

Nonetheless, Warner Bros. executives -- perhaps afraid questions about the Man of Steel's sexual orientation may marginalize the film -- contain pushed back on The Advocate's query and the Internet buzz it has created.

The film's director, Bryan Singer, who is gay, insisted to Reuters that Superman "is probably the most heterosexual personality in any movie I've ever made." Whatever that means.

It's an unusual day for superheroes and outing.

DC Comics, which publishes "Superman," recently revealed that Batwo
