Three days ago, I had the privilege of visiting the Alabaster House for the first-ever Bisexual Knowledge Policy Briefing. This honor came to me as a board member of BiNet USA, an organization dedicated to raising the public presence of the bi community and knowledge of issues affecting them. Being at the White Dwelling this week, with more than 100 activists who distinguish as bisexual and bi plus was exhilarating—and a drawn-out way from the day seven years ago when I came out as bi.
Like a lot of bisexual people, I recognized that I was bi at an older age. Until that point, I always thought of myself as straight and never thought or questioned otherwise. Through high school and college, I had boyfriends and the relationships were always fulfilling. I started to realize I was also attracted to women when I developed a crush on a former coworker, who ultimately ended up being my first girlfriend. My partnership with her was just as fulfilling as my previous relationships with men.

I keep hearing the word ‘sexuality’ – what is it?
Sexuality isn’t just about sex, it’s about your feelings, emotions, attractions and desires and how you express these.
It includes whether we’re attracted to people the same gender as you, a distinct gender, or are attracted to more than one gender (which is what makes up what is known as our sexual orientation – whether we identify as lesbian, homosexual or bisexual) as adv as what we act sexually.
Having sexual thoughts and feelings is a normal, healthy part of human life. This is accurate no matter what gender you’re attracted to. Some people aren’t interested in sex at all, and this is normal too and you might then identify as asexual.
When will I know if I’m gay or straight or bisexual or transgender?
It takes time to figure out who we are sexually and to understand our gender identity and orientation, just as it takes time to figure out other areas of our lives.

Deeply intimate questions are often asked of people seeking asylum on the basis of their sexual orientation. Yet, few possess ever dared reside out their sexuality.
