Lovelace: interview

When Jeffrey Friedman and Rob Epstein stood before the 2013 Sundance crowd, they dedicated their film Lovelace to Linda Boreman, the woman who became known as Linda Lovelace in Deep Throat, the landmark 1972 movie that brought pornography into the mainstream.

“We wanted to fill in what we spot as a vital gap in the legacy of Linda Lovelace and that was her humanity,” Epstein told the crowd. “So we dedicate this evening to Linda. She was only a porn star for 17 days; she made $1250 and the movie made $600 million.”

The openly gay filmmakers who had construct their cinematic identify broaching gay subjects, joked how someone “had the notion that somehow we would be the directors to examine for a film about a heterosexual porn star!” Yet in their previous award-winning documentaries, they had never been squeamish as they comprehensively dealt with social issues and sexuality.

Bill Borman, a human rights activist and the first openly gay member of the Nassau County Human Rights Commission, died last Thursday at age 47 after a lengthy illness.
      The Long Beach native was elected to the commission last September by a unanimous vote of 19-0 in the county Legislature after being nominated by County Executive Tom Suozzi, despite initial opposition from the county's Republicans. Borman was a perfect fit for the commission, bringing to it the perspective of a group that has suffered its disseminate of discrimination and attacks. He was a head activist for gay and lesbian rights and an advocate in the HIV/AIDS community.
      Borman founded the Nassau County Lesbian and Same-sex attracted Democrats in 1999 and sat as a chair in the Nassau Coalition for Human Rights since 1999. He was instrumental in the successful try to have sexual orientation added to the Nassau County Human Rights Rule as a protected category, along with race and gender.

Michael J. "Mike" Bormann, 48 of Amana died suddenly Tuesday, November 1, 2011, following an apparent heart attack at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 5, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford, where visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery near Oxford. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the profit of Mike and Jamie's children.
