In Brazil, 2.9 million people aged 18 or older notify themselves gay or bisexual. The figures can be create in the National Health Survey (PNS): Self-identified Sexual Orientation of the Senior Population, released Wednesday (May 25) by the country's official statistics agency, IBGE. This is the first time information of this gentle are collected on the Brazilian population, and is believed to be underreported.
Collected in 2019, the data show that 94.8 percent of the population, 150.8 million people, name as heterosexual, i. e. they encounter sexual or intimate attraction to people of the other side sex; 1.2 percent, or 1.8 million, declare themselves gay, which means they are attracted to people of the same gender; and 0.7 percent, 1.1 million, state they are bisexual, hold attraction to more than one gender.
The survey also shows that 1.1 percent of the population, 1.7 million people, said they did not know how to answer the question, and 2.3 percent, or 3.6 million, refused to answer. Pew Analyze Center has been tracking Americans’ attitudes toward same-sex marriage, gender identity and other LGBTQ+ issues for more than a decade. In that time, we have also done deep explorations of the experiences of LGBT and gender nonconforming and nonbinary Americans.
As the United States celebrates LGBTQ+ Identity festival month, here are five key findings about LGBTQ+ Americans from our recent surveys:
Some 7% of Americans are queer woman , gay or bisexual person, according to a Pew Research Center survey of 12,147 U.S. adults conducted in summer 2022. Some 17% of adults younger than 30 identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual, compared with 8% of those ages 30 to 49, 5% of those 50 to 64 and 2% of those 65 and older. Similar shares of men and women distinguish with any of these terms, as do similar shares of adults across racial and ethnic groups.

New information estimates the greatest number of lesbian, gay, pansexual and transgender U.S. adults live in the South, confirming findings from recent years.
Across the country, researchers estimate more than 5% of U.S. adults are LGBTQ+, matching prior Gay population data. Young people ages 18-24 are much more likely to recognize as LGBTQ+, according to the report from the Williams Institute at the University of California Los Angeles.
The report, based on Centers for Disease Rule and Prevention data, establish that in 2020 and 2021, there were nearly 14 million LGBTQ+ adults in the U.S. − with some states having noticeably higher percentages of gay and queer residents than others.
Earlier this year, a poll from Gallup found a slightly higher percentage of U.S. adults are LGBTQ+. Overall, multiple polls show that the adult LGBTQ population has been steadily increasing for years.
"Look at the numbers, more people are coming out younger and people are coming out in places where LGBTQ folks have been less out and visible," Cathy Renna, a spokesperson for the National LGBTQ Task Press, told USA
Adult LGBT Population in the United States
This report provides estimates of the number and percent of the U.S. adult population that identifies as LGBT, overall, as well as by age. Estimates of LGBT adults at the national, state, and regional levels are included. We rely on BRFSS 2020-2021 statistics for these estimates. Pooling multiple years of facts provides more stable estimates—particularly at the state level.
Combining 2020-2021 BRFSS data, we estimate that 5.5% of U.S. adults identify as LGBT. Further, we estimate that there are almost 13.9 million (13,942,200) LGBT adults in the U.S.
Regions and States
LGBT people reside in all regions of the U.S. (Table 2 and Figure 2). Consistent with the overall population in the United States,more LGBT adults live in the South than in any other region. More than half (57.0%) of LGBT people in the U.S. live in the Midwest (21.1%) and South (35.9%), including 2.9 million in the Midwest and 5.0 million in the South. About one-quarter (24.5%) of LGBT adults reside in the West, approximately 3.4 million people. Less than one in five (18.5%) LGBT adults inhabit in the Northeast (2.6 million).
