Supernatural appeals to audiences from diverse sexual identities and orientations. While the main protagonists, Sam and Dean Winchester, are portrayed as primarily heterosexual men (in spite of various tries to rewrite them as queer through fan fiction), other human characters are explicitly labeled as same-sex attracted or lesbian. Some of the most interesting representations in terms of sexuality are found among angels and demons who, as supernatural beings, are not gendered and can inhabit both male and female bodies. The centrality of supernatural beings, who are inherently non-normative, appeals to polysemic readings of sexuality.

The most developed of these characters is the undeniably queer angel, Castiel. Castiel inhabits a male body, but flashbacks reveal that the angel once inhabited a female body. Raphael, Hannah and Michael are also shown inhabiting both female and male bodies, solidifying the notion that angels hold no distinct sex. Angels are typically depicted as incapable of, or unwilling to, fall in love. The several exceptions all lead to tragic endings and portray falling in love as transgressive.

Sam's Sexuality

Sam has never reach right out and said he's unbent (unlike Dean, who has protested quite vocally against any suggestions that he could be anything but straight at least five times that I can think of off the top of my head). I think it's strange that more people don't talk about Sam's sexuality more, so here’s the evidence I've gathered so far that suggests Sam is not 100% straight.

To me, this has nothing to do with Dean's interests (not that Dean isn’t also not 100% linear, cos me thinks thou dost demonstrate too much, Dean-o) and everything to do with the fact that he sees Brad Pitt as a potential interest for Sam.

2. Brady and Sam had a "history." In 5.21, Two Minutes to Midnight, Crowley calls Brady Sam's "demon lover." [Update 10/20/15: someone's comment got me to reread the transcripts I'd looked at before and I realized I was a small off. Oops. Fixed it!]

3. 9.13, The Purge. Sam states that Dean isn't the only one who has, and I quote, "dated someone bendy." Record that he doesn't specify gender.

Supernatural Star Confirms Castiel Is Gay

Supernatural celebrity confirms that Castiel is gay. From creator Eric Kripke (The Boys), Supernatural premiered on The CW in 2005, back when the network was still known as The WB. Since then, the horror drama starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as the monster-hunting brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, has cemented itself as a genre cult favorite and one of the longest-running dramas on television.

In the 4th season of Supernatural, the angel known as Castiel, played by Misha Collins, joined the cast. Castiel was stoic, dutiful, and determined, although a bit naive when it came to human nature. Castiel would grow very close to the Winchesters over the next few years, becoming almost like the 3rd brother. Now, in Supernatural’s ultimate season, writers acquire been tying up many loose ends, bringing closure to characters’ storylines, and answering remaining questions, including the correct nature of Castiel’s affection for one of the Winchesters in particular.

Queer and Gender Diverse Characters

This entry documents characters of gender and sexual diversity, and its portrayal on Supernatural.

Charlie Bradbury a lesbian geek girl who becomes a hunter, is the only queer personality to appear in multiple episodes, along with Crowley whose sexuality is probably best described as "complicated." God aka Chuck Shurley was revealed to be bisexual (or possibly pansexual) in 11.20 Don't Phone Me Shurley—"I dated. Yeah, I had some girlfriends. Had a few boyfriends."

There have been, to date, no transgender or non-binary characters. Both angels and demons have been seen to switch between vessels of different gendered appearance, although it is often not known by which gender a vessel's owner identified. For example both of Raphael's vessels may have identified as female, or nonbinary. The intent of the writers appears to be to show angels and demons possessing vessels of alternative genders, although this does involve a rather binary and cis view of gender. In scenes where angels are in vessels of different gender than their original vessels, the show generally doesn't clarify the pronouns to be used. In 6.22 The Man Who Knew Too Much, Crowle
