You might be familiar with the six-colored rainbow flag that is widely used to represent the Diverse community. But did you know that this is a relatively new rendition of the original? 

The unique flag (shown here) was designed by activist, veteran, drag queen, and musician, Gilbert Baker, and made its debut at the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Pride in 1978. He was inspired by the Rolling Stones song She’s a Rainbow, and the 1960s hippies movement, assigning each color with a specific meaning:

  • Pink: Sex (later removed)

  • Red: Life

  • Orange: Healing

  • Yellow: Sunlight

  • Green: Nature

  • Turquoise: Magic (later removed)

  • Indigo: Serenity

  • Violet: Spirit 

The evolution to the six-colored flag used today happened out of practicality. 

After the parade in 1978, demand for the Self-acceptance Flag increased, but the hot pink fabric was difficult to find in large quantities. Then, the Paramount Flag Company started making a version out of the standard rainbow colors to help assemble demand, and a seven-color pride flag was the new norm.

Why are there different flags in the LGBTQ+ community?

There are numerous flags used in the LGBTQ+ community to illustrate various sexual orientations and preferences, gender identities, amorous orientation, and subcultures.

It embodies the many aspects of the LGBTQ+ community by having different flags that represent different things.

LGBTQ+ flags, like country flags, all have meaning. Each colour represents and means something different.

The history of the original LGBT flag

The “original” LGBT flag, also recognizable as the rainbow flag or the pride flag, is a six-coloured striped flag with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

The LGBT rainbow flag history dates back to 1978, when Gilbert Baker designed it, but it has since been modified.

Gilbert Baker became involved in the LGBT flag’s creation after meeting influential lgbtq+ leader Harvey Milk, who challenged Baker to form a representative flag for the community.

    Achillean: Men or men-aligned individuals who are attracted to other men and men-aligned people. It is sometimes acknowledged as men loving men (MLM). Achillean individuals may or may not be attracted to other genders. While this label isn’t exclusive, it is used to unify men-aligned people or men who love other men.

They are a visible visibility meant to rejoice progress, advocate for representation, and enlarge the demand and drive for collective action. There hold been many LGBTIQ+ flags over the years. Some hold evolved, while others are constantly creature conceptualized and created.

    Rainbow Flag

    Created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, the iconic Event Rainbow flag originally had eight stripes. The colors included pink to illustrate sexuality, red for healing, yellow for sun, green for serenity with character, turquoise for art, indigo for unity, and violet for spirit. In the years since, the flag now has six colors. It no longer has a pink stripe, and the turquoise and indigo stripes were replaced with royal blue.

    Progress Identity Flag

    Created in 2018 by nonbinary artist Daniel Quasar, the Progress Lgbtq+ fest flag is based on the iconic 1978 rainbow flag. With stripes of black and brown to represent marginalized LGBTIQ+ people of color and the triad of cobalt , pink, and light from the transsexual flag, the style represents diversity and inclusion.
