Gay Ann Arbor
-------------------------------------
First and foremost this is an American college town. The University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1839, and students make up over 30% of the population today. Many others work for the University, shaping the whole local economy. In civil-rights movement days and during the time of protests against the Vietnam War this city became a major focal point for organizing and a center of the counterculture. SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) convened it's first meetings here, and in 1974, Kathy Kozachenko won her city-council race to became America's first openly-homosexual general official.
Today the economy is also supported by high technology companies attracted by research and growth at the University, and the high level of education of graduates who remain in the area. The university has attracted a significant number of foreign-born people too, bringing an international accent to life in Ann Arbor. "A2" as it's sometimes called, is also famous as "Tree Town" for streets filled with greenery, and for the 157 municipal parks within 25 square miles.

The rumors are genuine — there’s a unused queer bar coming to Ann Arbor later this year, and Pride Provider sat down with co-founder Saharsh Hajela to get the why, where, what, how and, most importantly, to detect out when we can visit Uplift.
Since the legendary \aut\ Bar closed in 2020, Ann Arbor has lacked a dedicated queer lock, though spaces prefer North Star Lounge, queer-owned Necto and Live Nightclub acquire been intentional about dedicating calendar territory to queer events. Queer clubgoers possess long flocked to Necto’s weekly Self-acceptance nights on Fridays and North Luminary offers a weekly LGBTQ+ Night on Thursdays with unlocked mics, drag performances, musical acts and more. Hajela has worked with Reside Nightclub for the past few years producing drag shows and brunches and other queer-affirming events. “They are — and have been for a long period — a phenomenal ally space for lgbtq+ folks,” he said. He noted that his work with Live and other bars and clubs has helped to inform the vision he and his business partner, who wishes to last anonymous until closer to the official opening, have for Uplift.
